Year 7 Marae week 2020

Last week was our annual Year 7 Marae Week

Over the past week of the Year 7's took part in our annual Marae Week. The students worked through a full day of technology and two days of activities as well as learning about the protocol around a powhiri. The week concluded with the haka competition.

This year the haka competition was a little different as every class learnt the school haka under the leadership of their classroom Taiopeka members, year 8 Tuakana and Matua Manuel's guidance during year 7 Marae Week practices.  It was great to see the commitment and dedication our Tuakana and Taiopeka bought to the classes. Congratulations to 19A on winning the haka competition.

Monday saw the Year 7's being welcomed onto the Marae as manuhiri before splitting off into their classrooms to learn about the structure of a powhiri and enjoy a shared lunch.

The two days of activities included, tukutuku panels, myths and legends, rakau, poi, and  harakeke with Karyn who very kindly came out of the office to support our Marae Week. Thanks Karyn.

The tech rotations involved the students making fried bread, jewellery, whakatauki art and wooden keepsake boxes.

The week finished with our traditional hangi which was enjoyed by all.

I would like to thank, Matua Manuel, Karyn, the year 8 Tuakana, Mr Wells and all the Year 7 & Tech teachers who made this week so special for all the children.
