The University of Otago Marine Studies and the Portobello Aquarium extension science programmes.

During term 3&4 we have had two groups at the Portobello Aquarium. The students were introduced to the Marine life through the touch tanks before embarking on their own studies. The students established a research question and worked together with students from other schools. They had to carry out research, collect samples and gather data, and report back to the community.

The students have returned to school excited about the work they have been doing as they engage with scientists and science. The photos in the article feature Nora and some of the photos she took while out researching cockles and parasites.

Other topics of research were 'Crabtastic Niches' which investigated crabs on the rocky shore and the role they play for the ecosystem.  'Spotlight on Plankton' asking the question which plankton do red billed gulls eat? 'Marine Metre Squared' which focused on human impact on biodiversity.

The term 4 focus is for Pasifika students, they are working through four modules at the aquarium, looking at connecting and caring for the ocean, science curiosity, science in the natural world and science for survival.  We look forward to hearing the outcomes of their investigations later in the term.
