On Thursday morning Maia Scott was awarded the prestigious Sir Peter Bake Leadership, presented to Maia by Allen Anderson. This was very well deserved and we congratulate her on this special achievement.

She is a talented sportsperson, who is involved in a wide variety of codes and achieves at a high level. She leads by example, attends practices, shows fairness to team members and follows instructions from her coaches that earn her such high accolades. It is as House Leader, responsible for the behaviour, participation and enjoyment of her team, that Maia rises again. She takes this role seriously and ensures the students are aware of what is involved at events, such as at our Cross Country and Athletic Sports where Mahuika / Red House girls were given every opportunity to compete and have fun.

She is a dedicated member of our performing Choir, Cook Island group and Taiopeka, our Kapa Haka group, where she shows commitment to practices and attends all community performances.

Maia was a popular choice from staff and is a respected student among her peers. Comments from staff include” I have been struck by her willingness to help out - just seeing what needs to be done, supporting others or offering to go the extra distance…” “Maia is an extremely polite, but quiet and modest student – she would never push herself in front of a crowd to ensure she was recognised. I believe she is outstanding.” In the classroom her teacher speaks very highly of the way she role models a positive work ethic, behaviour and attitude to her classmates. This is not always easy with the pressure from peers, but her strength of character comes through as she keeps her personal standards high. This also applies in the wider school community.

Her academic involvement at Tahuna has included achieving highly in the ICAS exams, being in the winning O’Mathalon team, special Problem Challenge, completing her Silver Reading badge and in a Literacy Quiz team.

She has her Citizenship badge, been a School Councillor, Road Patroller for 2 years, actively supported the SPCA Cupcake fundraiser, Assembly signer, involved in the Water Testing research, Open Night helper, Marae Week Tuakana, Netball Umpire at Edgar, Library Monitor and was selected for the Stewart Island Leadership Camp. “You manifest goodness in others around you,” was said from one of the accompanying staff here.

She is able to naturally demonstrate the Sir Peter Blake ideals without pretension, showing integrity, a determination to succeed, great team building and leadership. She is very hard working and does know how to have fun, but most importantly, is an extremely grounded and solid Tahuna citizen, who epitomizes all the values we encourage in our students. With values like this, she is sure to go far. Sir Peter Blake would be very proud to see Maia as a recipient of the medal.
