Interactive Science takes off with a bang

Our Interactive Science elective had a great first session last Friday.

We had an awesome start to the Term Two Elective program last Friday. The Interactive Science elective took off with a bang. These students are very lucky to have lecturers from the University of Otago NeuroEndocrinology department volunteering their time to run interactive sessions each Friday.

Week one was all about Neurons and pathways. Students learnt about how the left side of their brain controls the right side of their body and vice versa. They put this to use wearing 'upside-down goggles' to confuse the message to the brain, and trying to shoot nerf targets. This was a very big challenge. After that, they tried to play hand games with the goggles which was almost impossible.

The second half of the session saw students learning about the different parts of a Neuron, and then making their own Neuron models using pipe cleaners. We completed the session by making a brain pathways (by linking hands in a chain) from hand to brain and trying to move mexican wave the correct way based on where the message was coming from.

We had an awesome first session and are very excited for our other activities coming up such as our visit to the Anatomy Museum. We are very grateful to Dr Joon Kim and his colleagues for putting these cool activities together for us.
