3D House Construction in Maths

Students have been excited, engaged and busy designing and building their 3D houses in Maths.

Measurement tools and skills have a variety of uses in everyday life. The ability to use measuring tools, rulers, thermometers, scales, and to estimate with these tools are necessary skills that enable us to quantify the world around us.

So as part of our measurement unit, we decided to use our measurement skills to design and build 3D houses.

Firstly students researched a variety of house styles and floor plans. They had to decide how many floors they wanted. There were minimum requirements that each house needed; 3 bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, windows, stairs to connect the floors. Communication, team work and cooperation were also essential to the smooth operation of each build.

It has been a classroom buzzing with excitement and problem solving. I have been so impressed with the different ways the students have worked out how to construct their houses.
