Fantastic Footballers.

Last term, we (Tehya and Ngaio) travelled to Alexandra to trial for 13th and 14th grade National Age group for Lower South Island rep girls.

There were about 26 of the best female footballers from Central, Southland and Otago all trialling to make it into the 2017 squad.

We both thought it was going to be a challenge. During some of the drills we realised how strong the other players from Central and Southland were. We put ourselves out there and showed our pace, skill and strategies so they’d all know that we really wanted to be on the team. We played the best football we could.

Even though we were on a smaller pitch, we made the most of what we had. We didn’t have to run as much as we would on a larger field, therefore we saved our energy for when we needed it the most (running, passing and shooting).

At the second trial, the level of skill from the players was a lot higher, we both didn't think we were going to make it. We were stoked to find out that we made it into National age group squad and that we were some of the best female football players in our grade in the region. We are going to be travelling to Wellington to compete in a tournament against girls throughout New Zealand.

We want to say a couple of things - you never know what could happen if you give it your best shot. If it doesn't happen the first time, try again and again until you succeed.
