Angus Cameron - Basketball Star

In the second week of the holidays there was a U13 South Island basketball tournament. The teams were Otago A,Canterbury Red and Black,North Canterbury,Southland Mid Canterbury and Nelson.

To prepare for the tournament we had to have two practices a week. On a Thursday and Sunday. If we wanted to we could go to morning practices before school to improve our skills. Our team stayed at Southland Boys Hostel in Invercargill. On the Thursday we played two games against Nelson and Canterbury Red. We lost to a good Nelson team by fifty points and beat Canterbury Red by one. The next day we went to the movie, Pixels for some team bonding. We won both of our games against North and Canterbury Black.  On the third day we were all exhausted and lost to Southland who we bet in qualifiers. That afternoon we bet Mid Canterbury by twenty to make the final against Nelson. The following day we chilled out because our game was in the afternoon. With the New Zealand selectors watching we got out to a flying start to a tall Nelson team. But in the end Nelson were too good and pulled away to win by twenty.

After our final we waited for prize giving. Our team went up and shook the Tall Ferns coach hand and got our picture taken. The tournament was a good experience for me because I got to meet some new people and also got to play against some really good players. A few weeks later my Mum got a email to say I got into the New Zealand Development team (South Island team). Two of my teammates got into the team too. Next year in January the team gets to got to Australia to play against the U14 Australian team.
