Kids Can Cook

A number of Tahuna Year 8 students where kindly invited by Bayfield  College to a cooking session with a celebrity chef. Thanks to Ella and Abby for reporting on this for the newsletter.

Last Monday, 40 Tahuna year eight students went to Bayfield High School to a Teens Can Cook presentation. The 40 students were invited by Bayfield to watch chef John Fortune demonstrate easy and healthy cooking techniques. He showed us how to make crepes from scratch with silverbeet and apple and, believe it or not, many of the Tahuna students really enjoyed tasting his creation. Unfortunately, we did not get to try any cooking ourselves. The aim of the demonstration was to show us how easy it can be to make delicious, but healthy food and this message certainly got through and reinforced the messages about healthy food that we get from Mrs Scott.

Another major message was about the evils of energy drinks! Apparently they are just water and lots and lots of sugar and colourings which is really bad for our teeth, our weight and our wallets! According to the deputy Principal Mr Campbell, the demonstration was also a bit of ploy to get Tahuna students over to Bayfield to see their facilities and get familiar with it as we start to think about our High School options for next year.

Overall it was an informative and enjoyable event, and together with walking to and from Bayfield, we all felt healthier for it!

On Monday morning about 30 year 8 Tahuna students went to Bayfield High School to take part in a cooking demonstration done by Chris Fortune, a celebrity chef. The students were there for about 1 hour. Chris’s demonstration mainly focused on the importance of healthy living and eating right. The message hit home when Chris told us about energy drinks and how bad they actually are for you with 1 drink being 25% sugar and 75% water and only a few drops of caffeine and guarana which is what some people like most about them. Some students were drinking one of these a day. Then students got to try some silver beet and apple crepes that Chris made to show that healthy eating can also taste good. A big thank you to Bayfield High School for having us, it was awesome.
