40 Hour Famine!

Last weekend was the 40 hour famine. We had over 100 students participating in the challenge, fundraising for refugees in South Sudan. Here is Taylor and Ruby's experience.

Hi I am Taylor McLean and me and my friend Ruby Brew did the 40hr famine together on the 24th of April. We did it at Ruby's house and contributed by finding boxes for our fort. Our task was to stay in the box for the whole forty hours and live out of our backpack. We had some trouble to be honest and had to get pillows for our bed as the floor was terrible and had bruised our hips ( we felt so sorry for the people in South Sudan! ). During the forty hour famine it made us realise just how lucky we are to have a stable roof over our head and hot meals twenty four, seven whenever we want. There were some ups and downs, for example an up was we had devices to play on, a down was the boxes were low which was annoying. We cut a window out of the cardboard as we were sore from sliding through our not even 30 centimetres tall hallway.

We actually spent 44 hours in our amazing fort but that made up for all the times we got out, we can admit we got out a few times but it was worth it.

We made the time go by playing on technology and drawing on our box with markers to remember the fun times we had. With our technology my mum made us have limited time on it to save battery so we weren't on there all the time.

We have to admit it was good to have breaks from technology. Plus most kids don't have technology to play on, they have to go outside and fight for themselves .The things we got to eat and drink were noodles (which my mum heated up), lollies, chocolate, crackers, chips, seaweed (we are both fans), some coke (we were able to sneak) and three bottles of water to keep us hydrated.

It was hard during the full day on Saturday because we couldn't get any fresh air. it was stuffy and hot in our box and we felt really gross without having a shower for 3+ days. We were also bored during the day but eventually we found something to do.

In the end we felt so good because we had a luxury breakfast (pancakes and bacon) and then I went with Taylor to have the nicest bit of fresh air, a good walk on the beach. We did flips on the dunes and ran around because we didn't get any fitness over our 44 hr time and mind you it was hard watching ruby’s younger brother on the tramp from the glass sliding doors! We had such a great time and if you ever feel the need to help someone, do the 40 hr famine so kids like us have the chance to feel hope and laughter again. We hope we raised enough to do a difference to these kids lives in South Sudan who need it more than us!
