Water testing 2017

10 students from Tahuna are participating in water testing for Tomahawk Lagoon, alongside John McGlashan, and Bayfield school. We spent the day on Wednesday week 4, learning how to test the water for PH level, oxygen, turbidity, and much more!

Ten Tahuna students will be attending fortnightly sessions with Andrew Innes, testing the water quality at Tomahawk Lagoon. Our introduction session was so interesting, Andrew showed us how to gather water samples, why it is important to collect data and where the water comes from.

The water in the Tomahawk lagoon had been previously polluted by algae and when we were there testing we could see the damage it was causing. It was interesting to note that the algae bloom had also affected the Waihola Lake, this was the green sheen that we saw on top of the water. Part of the water testing is finding out what may be wrong with the quality, how it is affecting its inhabitants and how it can be fixed.

It was great to see all the Tahuna students fully engaged and interested in the process. We are excited for the water testing sessions to come.
