Are We There Yet?

Room 5 and Room 12 Exhibition

Time has gone quickly for Room 5 & 12 students. On Wednesday we had the opportunity to showcase our hard work in an exhibition called ‘Are We There Yet?”in recognition of 125 years of womens’ suffrage in New Zealand. We asked ourselves the big question (‘Are We There Yet?’) and interviewed women in our lives that we admired and who inspired us.

We took on the task of telling ‘HER’ story.

We learnt a lot about how our lives are different in comparison to our aunties, Mums, grandmothers, even great-grandmas. We asked questions about their greatest achievements, advice they would give to their 16 year old self and about some of the challenges they have faced as women. We learnt about gender inequality and how much things have changed for women so far.

Our hard work culminated in an exhibition showcasing our retelling of the stories of these incredible women. We were so pleased to have so many visitors including some of the interviewees, Mr. Hunter, Tahuna staff and the fantastic women from Otago Museum who had been involved in the Museum’s own Suffrage 125 exhibition.

It was fascinating to learn much more about the stories of the women we researched. We learnt a lot about how limited choices and freedoms were for women in the past.

We feel lucky to have more opportunities than in the past and now have a good awareness of what gender equality is.

When the exhibition closed we felt very proud to have told the stories of so many amazing local women.
