Year 8 News
What an awesome term we are having so far.
Year 8 swimming has been completed with students participating in surf life saving skills, IRB (inflatable Raft Boat) experiences and raft building team challenges. Not to mention swim swimming lessons as well!! We have also finished our first health unit with students learning about how they can keep themselves and other safe.
The Year 8 team have also started their chemistry unit and we have been looking at the 3 main states of matter. One of the experiments was looking at how salt reacts with ice to lower its freezing point. We used this reaction to make ice cream and the students learned that by added salt to ice you can lower its temperature to -8 ÂșC!!! It was also very tasty. Some students even tried it at home. Ask your child how to do it if you would like to know more.
We have also been making sherbet and looking at the chemical reaction it has with water to help understand why is was considered the world's first soft drink. Next we will be looking at Oobleck and how we can turn that into dry clay to make our molecule models!!
Next week we will be celebrating Matariki the year 8 team have each contributed in their teams to help celebrate this time. We would love to see you there.
As you can see it has been a pretty fun and engaging term so far.
Looking forward to term 3 and our Kaitiaki displays.
