TALOFA LAVA!

This week is Samoan Language Week and Room 9 have taken the opportunity to learn about tapa art (known as siapo in Samoa). We created our very own art piece and put these together to create our own class siapo.

Did you know?

- Siapo is one of the oldest forms of Samoan Cultural Art

- It is passed from generation to generation

- It is used in clothing, burial shrouds, bed covers, ceremonial garments and much more

- The canvas of Siapo is the bark of the Paper Mulberry Tree

- The brown dye, known as O'a, is taken from the bark of the Blood Tree

- All of the dye colours are from the natural environment (plants)

- The symbols used in Siapo reflect the Samoan environment

If you would like to create your own design, like the ones we created, type into YouTube 'Samoan Snow Flakes' and follow the step by step tutorial.
