Science with Dave Warren at Otago University.

Chemistry is always fun at Tahuna but this year we travelled to the Mellor Laboratory at the Otago University.

Room 12 had a brilliant session with Dr Dave Warren today. This was our second session at the Mellor Laboratory and it was exciting to be in the new facilities at the Otago University.

The students got to melt/ dissolve magnesium in acid, an activity that was completed 3 times. Each time they had to measure accurately and time the process, putting their results onto a board.

The second stage of the session, students had to bring in another variable, H2O with the acid and magnesium. It was interesting to hear their thoughts on how this might alter the dissolving process.

Lastly, Dave allowed all the students to have a go at holding fire!

It was such a fabulous session at the University and we were very fortunate to have this organised for us.
