Tahuna Tech
Students have been busy exploring their new subject area over the last 6 weeks during the term.
Within Visual Art the year 7 students have been learning about art elements, getting inspiration from an artist and creating their own work based around organic shapes and lines. There are beautiful landscapes using lines to show shape and form. Parents please ask to look at the Google Classroom Art Assignment, as students have started adding photos of the work they have covered.
Year 8 students have been learning about monochromatic painting, mixing colours, control and application of paint. Creative, mixed media, colourful acrylic paintings are being produced based on their interests, goals and expressing themselves. Students are beginning to add photos into their Google Classroom Art Assignments. Parents please ask your child to see what has been done so far.
In Hard Materials, students are skilled up and getting stuck in to making planter boxes to beautify the school. Using low-grade pine keeps costs down and allows students to learn through trial and error - “fail early, fail often” is the motto. Here students are sawing and drilling planks for the planter box - oh no Ben! Don’t drill directly on to the bench, you should have a waste block underneath!
At the end of this unit, your children should be able to measure, square, saw, drill accurately, plane, sand and paint - all they need to fix the fence, for instance. Once students have honed their skills on the school project, they will make a project to take home using rimu or macrocarpa and finishing it to a higher degree. Thanks to parents and grandparents who have shared stories of “tech in the old days” in the year 7 homework investigation. It’s especially interesting to read about Tahuna in the old days.
In E-Tech students are required to make a project for yourself or someone else using the Laser cutter. Most students have finished the cardboard prototype stage of their major 5 week project and are now enjoying getting started on choosing and preparing the materials that will be cut out on the laser cutter and assembled to form their finished projects.
Students are making stands for various purposes, games, toys, dioramas, and a wide range of different projects that they have chosen.
In Food Technology Year 8 students have used the FIFA Women's Football World Cup as their inspiration as they research countries from around the world. Each group will plan and trial recipes from at least two different countries.
Year 7 students are beginning to work on developing dinner recipes to feed a family of 4 for less than $20. We look forward to sharing some of these recipes in the next newsletter!
