Mystery Substances in Room 6!

Our science term kicked off with an investigation designed to test the student's observation skills.

The students were in groups of three and each had petri dishes, three cups with vinegar, water and iodine in each, a tea spoon, droppers, a recording sheet and a pen to use.

Their task was to observe five mystery substances and record their findings. Then add the three liquids separately to each of the mystery substances and observe and record any reactions.

They then attempted to identify the mystery substances. Using their observation data they researched the reaction online to see if they could confirm the mystery substance.

There was a huge amount of confidence from the students, but not the same amount of success when the substances were revealed:

  1. Baking Soda

  2. Cream Of Tartar

  3. Corn Starch

  4. Baking Powder

  5. Laundry Detergent

Hopefully these observation skills and recording of information using scientific and technical information will help them with their future scientific investigations.
