Science Science Everywhere

Room 15 have been busy designing icons for the creation of Dunedin's Youth Map

This has been an incredibly busy month involving science.  The students have been involved in both the school and Aurora Science Fairs.  Room 15 have been involved in the Climate Kit Project and three science electives are being held on Friday mornings.

It was fantastic to see so many Tahuna students at the Aurora Science Fair awards held on Sunday.  Mayor Dave Cull addressed the young scientist where he talked about science being morally neutral and how even positive intentions can have negative effects.  He spoke about how science is all around us and the most important thing was the act of doing science even though it is challenging.  He commended the students on their potential in the field of science.

During the first two weeks of the term 3, Room 15 have been working on creating Dunedin's Youth Map.  The map is part of the Climate Kit display at the Otago Museum.

The students started by identifying areas they visit in Dunedin. The students looked at the Green Map icons and started drawing their own icons for the map.  The icons were then sent to the Climate Kit organisers who printed them up and put into the display as an interactive map for community consultation from the 4th- 16th of August.

The final step will be developing the icons further before finalising the map design ready for print.

Room 15 was also fortunate to have Sara and Beth the coordinators of the Climate Kit visit with the weather balloon they were using to map the Otago harbour.
