Athletics Day

By Abi Crowley

Last week on Friday the 13th Tahuna had our annual athletics day down at the Caledonian. I know that Friday the 13th sounds like a bad and unlucky day, but really it was filled with fun and excitement!

The day kicked off with everyone arriving with heaps of energy. The sun was a bit shy to begin with but eventually came out, luckily we Lomax had our sunscreen on. Once everyone had arrived we went down to the track and were separated into our house groups. Everyone was dressed in their house colours, it was like the field was splattered with red, green, yellow and blue. Then it was into groups and off to our first event.

Some of the events were hurdles, discus, long jump, 800 meters and sprints. Each person took their turn running, throwing and jumping and got their house 1 point for participation, 2 points for qualification.

As the day tracked along, we had morning tea and lunch breaks. After every house had completed all of the events we went back to the stadium to watch the sprint and relay finals. The crowd roared with exhilaration! Green house won the majority of relays (with three in total) and the sprints were won evenly. Overall the day was entertaining and lively! I hope next year will be just as fun!
