Chemistry of Cake

Science, maths and food tech combine!

Year 8 students have been carrying out a School Kit project in Food Technology that looks at the formula to make cake.

Students followed the formula below to make their test cake.

60g sugar + 60g fat + 60g egg + 60g flour 

Then they were required to design a cake formula that reduced the amount of sugar and also substituted in 80g 'vegetables' (chickpeas, beetroot, corn, black beans, peas).

We had to research what function each ingredient had in the formula and students had to plan carefully in their groups.

Some colourful, tasty and not so tasty trial cakes!
