Marae Week
What a fantastic week the year 7 students had during Marae Week.
Last week the Year 7 students had Marae week. The week started off with all the Year 7 children being welcomed onto the Marae of Tahuna. The students learnt about harakeke, tukutuku panels, Myths and Legends, Maori plant use and completed the week with a hangi.
Did you know that Maori traditionally used the Toetoe plant to symbolise learning. The hollow stem of the plant had water tipped down it and into the left ear of the learner to symbolise filling the head with knowledge. The kowhai plant flower was used for dying clothing.
Tukutuku panels are used in the Marae to tell a story. The students had two lessons on these and created a variety of stories. Check out the mountain and stars below.
The year 7's would like to thank the year 8 Tuakana for your support and teaching throughout the week. The Tuakana did a fantastic job with leading poi, haka as well as helping with the hangi and harakeke. Tu meke nga Tuakana
