Welcome to the 100km challenge!
Our maths focus for the first few weeks of the term is investigating length, area and perimeter. These key concepts have been integrated into our class fitness programme.
As is often the case some students can struggle with having a deep understanding of the difference between a shape's perimeter and its area. In class we discussed the shape of the block around Tahuna, it was measured and we found the area in square metres. I was looking for an activity that supported this learning and also linked to fitness with a medium term goal for all of the students to achieve at their own pace.
Michael from Rm.16 says "These middle terms in Room 16 we are doing a challenge. The 100km challenge. Basically, all it is is that we do our casual block run but this time we can choose how many laps we can do. The aim of the game is to at least have racked up 100km at the end of the couple terms we are doing this Hopefully we can all complete the challenge!"
The students all have a table in their maths books dedicated to this, where they update their data after each run. So far the students have run between 5 - 11kms!
Every step is a step closer to the goal, gaining fitness and reinforcing mathematical concepts.
