After returning from a successful few days away at camp the students were able to reflect on their experience...

The Berwick Gut Buster

By Alex Livingstone

It was 7am when my eyes flashed open. I was only thinking about one thing and one thing only: Todays gut buster. The gut buster is a very hard and intense 2.5km race in teams of around 7, where you don't just run, you run with a log on your shoulder that weighs at least 45kg. Two years ago my brother came to this exact camp and came away as the gut buster champion. I knew it would be hard and I knew it would be difficult but I was still excited. Before breakfast and before even getting properly dressed we were split into four teams to get ready for the thrilling activity. My team was made up of seven people: Jay, Will, Callum, Ezra, Charlotte, Naomi and of course  myself. "GO!!! " I heard as all 4 teams trampled of with the log on their shoulders. Everyone started off at slow jog or even a walk knowing that they had 5 long laps ahead of them and they needed to save as much energy as they can to finish the race. At first we were placed happily in second. It felt like it would go on forever and  would never end. I found that I worked best at the back were it was lower and I could hug the log and drive it forward. My team was tiring but I knew if we were going to win it we would have to believe in each other and work as a team. We were good and fast at going through the mud and under the cargo net. On the last lap it was very close and it felt like we could pass the team in front and win but at the same time it felt impossible like it couldn't be done. On the last few corners we gave it our all, cutting the corners as much as possible and only getting faster. We clipped the team in front and headed straight for the finish line, I knew it would be close, I wasn't shore we could hold the lead but once over the finish line we were both relieved that it was over and pleased with our victory.

And that was the gut buster!!!

The Night Line

By Abby Green

Remember the time when all the girls were freaking out as the parents lead us to the forest blindfolded for the Night Line. When we got there we set off one at a time following a long rope connected to lots of different trees. When it was my turn I held the rope and walked into someone in front of me so I passed them and a couple more people. We didn't know that the parents would try to scare us in many different ways. I only screamed once! Mr Phillips got down on his knees and ran bumping us and snorting like a pig. When I finally finished I could see we were near the tents. It was scary and fun all at the same time with lots of screams and laughter. The night line was awesome.

That was camp!!!
