What's in the droplet? Something new and never seen before!

ECCOTAGO and Tahuna, Tomahawk Lagoon Monitoring

On Tuesday the the Tahuna water testing team had a consultation morning to start preparing for their community consultation feedback. The students are focusing on the bug life at site one at the Tomahawk Lagoon.

There have been a number of changes at the lagoon this year. At the beginning of the year the lagoon was at the lowest recorded level since monitoring began. Raupō has died back and there are fewer pukeko. Inside the water, we have been noticing a larger quantity of amphipods which caused a greater problem of how to accurately count them. After a few months of trialing different ways, the team has settled on taking a 100ml sample and extrapolating from there.

The students have noticed a number of freshwater shrimp on a regular basis. Up until this year, it was very rare to see freshwater shrimp at site one.

Investigations are ongoing but does anyone know what is in the droplet?
