Supporting Your Child’s Transition to Tahuna Intermediate School
As the final term of Year 6 winds down, your child is preparing for one of their most exciting educational steps: beginning intermediate school at Tahuna. The shift to a larger school environment can be a mix of excitement and nerves for both students and parents. The summer holidays offer a perfect opportunity for you to provide quiet, positive support that will set your child up for a successful start.
Here is a guide on what you can do over the holidays to help your child prepare for their new adventure.
1. Foster Independence and Responsibility
Intermediate school is a big leap in terms of personal organisation and self-management. The more practice your child has with independence now, the easier the shift will be.
Practice Organisation: Encourage your child to take full ownership of their belongings. This could mean packing their own bag for day trips, managing their pocket money, or being responsible for their clothes.
Establish a Routine: While holidays are for relaxing, try to maintain a loose structure that includes a consistent bedtime and a set time for waking up, particularly the week before school returns. This will make the return to school-term hours less jarring.
Encourage Self-Advocacy: Intermediate students are expected to solve more of their own minor problems. Encourage your child to call a friend directly, book a library book online, or find information independently before asking you for help.
2. Talk Positively About the Changes
The unknown can be a source of anxiety. Open, positive conversations can help normalise the transition and turn nerves into excitement.
Focus on Opportunity: Talk about all the fantastic new experiences Tahuna offers, such as specialist subjects (technology, art, food), new sports teams, and the chance to make new friends from different primary schools.
Normalise Nerves: Let your child know it’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous. Share a brief, positive story about your own experience starting a new school or job. The message should be: 'It’s a big change, and you've got this.'
Revisit the School: If possible, drive past Tahuna Intermediate a few times. Point out the grounds or the main entrance to make the physical location more familiar. Walk around the school during the holiday period, play on the fields, use the turf and playground.
3. Develop Essential Life Skills
The intermediate years introduce new social and academic pressures. Use the holiday downtime to build the skills that will help them manage these demands.
Expand Social Circles: Encourage your child to connect with friends who are also going to Tahuna, if they know any. If not, schedule playdates or activities that expose them to new social situations and build their confidence in meeting people.
Read for Pleasure: Encourage reading a wide variety of books and articles. Intermediate school involves more in-depth research and longer reading assignments, and a strong reading habit is the foundation for success across all subjects.
Learn to Use the Kitchen: Food and nutrition become more personal in intermediate school. Spend time teaching them to pack a simple, healthy lunchbox or prepare an easy after-school snack. This small skill boosts their confidence and ensures they are fuelled for learning.
Keep physically active: Hopefully we have some lovely long summer days and you can all be out and about participating in various physical activities.
Getting to and from school: How will your child travel to school? If they are walking, scootering or biking, practice the route during the break, pointing out tips and tricks along the way. If they are busing to school, again go over the route and the timetable.
By taking these small steps over the summer, you can help your child feel prepared, confident, and excited to walk through the gates of Tahuna Intermediate School next year.
