Starting 2040 - by Jack and Taylor

In Room 8 this term and next we are doing the 2040 project. It has to do with thinking of ways to make Dunedin cleaner, pest-free, make sure it has more tourist attractions and more by 2040. We need to come up with a solution that will help with one of the 6 challenges Dunedin faces at the moment - such as rising sea levels. Then we make a model and enter it into the exhibition held by the Otago Polytech and Dunedin City Council.

For 2040 and also Samoan language week we have been reading about Sa’a’napu and its big problem with cyclones and rising sea levels. After reading the article about Sa’a’’napu we made a safe shelter for the village using co spaces or Metaverse.

The shelter had to Include space for 100 people with kitchen, sleeping spaces, dining rooms, nurseries, bathrooms, living spaces etc. Sa’a’napu is a village in Samoa that is on a beach. The villagers are prone to natural disasters and erosion on the beach. So we as a class have come up with different ideas such as bunkers, moving the village, putting it on stilts and more. Photos of Coby Wills’ bunker are attached.

It was fun thinking of ways to help the village and building on Co Spaces. The reading was interesting as well.
