Year 8 News

Just like our Year 7 students, the Year 8's have been delving into the fascinating world of Mahika Kai, with a special focus on the maka (barracouta). We've been exploring the rich variety of seafood available in the Ōtākou Harbour and learning about the complex food webs that sustain our unique marine environment.

Using this knowledge, along with research into traditional Māori fishing techniques, our students are now designing and creating their very own fishing lures specifically for catching maka. This hands-on project is a fantastic way for them to apply what they've learned in a practical and creative way.

To deepen their understanding, all Year 8 students have either visited or will soon be visiting the Marine Science Centre at Portobello. This trip provides an invaluable opportunity for them to see firsthand the incredible biodiversity of our local marine ecosystem.

In addition to our marine studies, our Year 8 students will be soaring to new heights this term! We are excited to announce our upcoming EOTC (Education Outside the Classroom) rock climbing day, which will take place this term and early in Term 4. Each class will spend a day at Long Beach with professional instructors, where they will have the chance to push themselves outside their comfort zone. This is another amazing opportunity for our students to experience new challenges and build resilience.

Ngā mihi,
