Tomahawk Lagoon

Water testing and tree planting.

At the end of February 24, keen citizen science students spent the day at the Tomahawk Lagoon, investigating and learning about the environment with some of our local high schools and ECCOTAGO community group.

The training day was full of wonderful science observations as the students learn to count and identify macrophytes, microinvertebrates, and the bird life within and around the lagoon.

17 keen Year 7 students also went away with Nicole from Smaills Beachcare Trust to site 3B and planted 21 native plants to help support the health and well-being of the feeder stream into the Lagoon. It was great to see the students not only planting trees but taking it upon themselves to remove the gorse around the area as well.

This year, Tahuna will continue its focus with the ORC to create signage around the lagoon, as well as going back to weekly monitoring.
