Space Camp Day 3

It just keeps getting better and better!

Today our learning focus was on physical adaptation to space and how humans might live on another planet or moon. We also talked about being in training rather than just learning, we were actually starting ourselves on paths that could lead to amazing careers later on.

We learned about adapting to a low oxygen environment. One of our leaders today is a real life Sherpa from Nepal who has climbed Mt Everest. He explained how humans need to adapt slowly so that they can handle the stress of living in a thin atmosphere.

We then got to go in a Hagglund which is an extreme terrain vehicle and has some features that would be similar to a vehicle used on Mars or the Moon.

Next we had a hands on STEAM challenge to build a landing capsule and parachute. There was lots of design thinking and problem solving using science and maths to aid us. We explored air resistance and physics and learned about the forces that would be acting on the capsule. Then we got to launch them off the balcony!

After an early lunch, it was into the buses for our first off site excursion to Clip and Climb. On the way there we discussed the impact that living in space had on the human body and it’s different systems. Once we arrived, after our safety briefing we could explore he effects of working at altitude and low gravity on ourselves, and it was heaps of fun too.

Many of us really challenged ourselves to do something that we had never done before or made us scared, and came away with an immense sense of accomplishment and pride, all part of being an astronaut in training!
