Ki-o-Rahi in The HUB
By Mac Chadwick
In the HUB and all over Tahuna, Ki o Rahi is a popular fitness game. Ki o Rahi is a Maori game which was lost when the Europeans came to NZ. Recently, in the past few years Ki o Rahi has made its return to NZ but only few people in the South Island know how to play. Ki o rahi is an all round fun game with two teams one called the Kioma and the other called the Taniwha. The Kioma have to run around touching the pou with the ball then running into the middle circle and scoring a try. The Taniwha have to rip the Kioma’s rips and then pass the ball into the blue circle
(Operating on the image below the field is not actually blue).
The four people in the blue circle have to throw the ball at the barrel in the middle. If they hit the barrel they get a point and if the Kioma score a try the Kioma get points. At the end of last year the year 7’s had a big Ki o Rahi tournament and everyone in The HUB cannot wait to participate in this competition.
