Tahuna Extension Camp at Stewart Island 2018
An opportunity for students to travel to Stewart Island to enhance their leadership skills, build confidence and experience an awesome part of New Zealand.
From 24th - 28th September a group of 20 students will get the opportunity to experience a unique outdoor education experience on Stewart Island. The camp last year was a big success and is designed to test out and improve the confidence of Tahuna students through adventure based learning opportunities. It also extends students who have an interest or excel in Outdoor Education opportunities.
As Tahuna has its own vans, transport costs will be kept to a minimum. Although the final cost per student is not finalised, it is anticipated that it will be around the $350 mark. (Similar camps to Stewart Island by other schools are double that price).
All students at Tahuna are encouraged to apply for this opportunity (last year there were over 50 applicants). All Tahuna students will be considered and will need to submit a letter to the Principal stating why they should be chosen to participate in this unique outdoor activity.
Some activities that will be part of the programme are:
- Tramping - Maori Beach or Kaipipi/ Ryans Creek.
- Exploration around Oban (day walks)
- Ulva Island - Science (Living World) visit to predator free sanctuary
- Museum - Social Sciences (History) Investigate the history of Stewart Island through Museum visit and follow up activities.
- Science (Living World) Marine Study. How does marine life differ in an untouched area to an urbanised area.
- Fishing - Charter - tied in with visit to Ulva Island. Catch and eat Blue Cod, Paua & Kina.
- Kiwi Spotting- Night time (and daytime) walks to spot try and find the elusive Kiwi in the wild.
