Measurement Experiments in Math.
Math students explore different types of measurements and calculate volume using Lemons, water and river rocks!
In Mrs Reddington's math class the students have been exploring different ways to measure. We looked at different units of measurement, explored how long we had to walk around a tennis court to walk 2km and we worked with lemons.
In groups the students had to estimate their results and then conduct experiments to see how right they really were! Previously we had used water and various containers to find volume. We read the cool story; Mr Archimedes Bath, and then set about recreating his theory with various river stones. It was interesting how our initial estimations were quite generous and then with more experimenting we became really good at estimating volume.
When we used lemons we did several investigations.
1. How much juice could be squeezed by hand from 6 lemons
2. How much juice could be squeezed using a juicer
3. How many pips in lemons
4. The length of the peel
5. The volume of the lemons
Once we had completed these investigations, Mrs Reddington asked us to bring our own fruit (not lemons) to conduct the same investigations (where applicable) to the fruit we brought along to class. Heaps of fun was had, lots of inquiry and then good fruit to eat afterwards.
