Room 5 Einstiens

Kia ora, I am really enjoying being a part of Room 5 and we have been up to lots of exciting things this week! We have been doing lots of science experiments, such as ‘Walking Water’ and ‘Magic Jumping beans,’ which Room 5 have loved getting involved in. Miss Fleming

Walking Water

Equipment:

Clear plastic cup x5

Paper towel x4

Food colouring x3

What you do:

What you do is you put 5 cups in a line all touching the side of another cup. You then fill the ones on the sides and the middle one up to ¾ with water. After that you put 2 drops of food colouring into each cup filled with water. Each cup you have have to use a different colour of food colouring. You then fold 4 paper towels until they are about 3 cm wide. After that you put them in the cups so they go from the full cups to the empty cups. There should be 2 paper towels going into each of the empty cups. 1 towel coming from each of the side cups and 2 coming from the middle.

What Happens:

The paper towel pulls the water up. The water travels up the paper towel, and into the other cup. The empty cups over time fill up with water because the paper towel keeps absorbing and transferring the water. When the full cups (all filled with different coloured water) transfer to the same empty cups the different coloured water combines creating new colours. For example, red and blue makes purple, and red and green makes orange.

The water transfers very slowly due to capillary action, so it's a very good experiment to set up and leave overnight. I would really recommend it.
