Year 8 News
Year of Growth, Challenge, and Success!
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou
As the 2025 school year draws to a close, it is with immense pride that we look back at the incredible journey and achievements of our Year 8 students. This cohort has truly embodied the spirit of Tahuna, tackling challenges with resilience and showing outstanding enthusiasm across all areas of school life.
Adventure and Resilience: Camp Columba and EOTC
The year was packed with unforgettable experiences outside the classroom, with Camp Columba being a major highlight early in Term 2. Over 200 students embraced the action-packed week, participating in high ropes, abseiling, kayaking, and the 'Flying Kiwi.' A huge thank you is extended to the dedicated parent volunteers whose support made these camps possible.
Building on that spirit of challenge, students soared to new heights later in the year during the rock climbing days at Long Beach. Working with professional instructors, students pushed outside their comfort zones, developing resilience and trust—skills that will serve them well beyond Tahuna.
Creativity and Connection: The Pantomime Project
Our Year 8s showcased their dramatic flair by immersing themselves in the Pantomime Project. They learned about pantomime traditions, developed scriptwriting skills, and ultimately wrote, produced, and performed their own fairytale-inspired shows. This project was a wonderful opportunity for them to connect with our wider community by performing for Year 1 and 2 students at contributing schools. The term also included an enriching trip to see the Otago Boys' High School production of Grease for comparison and inspiration.
Cultural and Environmental Learning: Mahika Kai
In a deep dive into local culture and environmental science, the Mahika Kai project focused on the barracouta (maka) and the complex food webs of the Ōtākou Harbour. Applying traditional Māori fishing techniques, students researched and creatively designed their very own fishing lures. This hands-on project was cemented by visits to the Marine Science Centre at Portobello, providing invaluable insight into our local marine biodiversity.
Essential Skills and Well-Being
Throughout the year, the students were equipped with crucial skills for life. This began early with a valuable First Aid Course in preparation for camp. Important units on Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) and Cyber Safety ensured students were provided with essential information and guidance for navigating the modern world.
We were also fortunate to welcome inspiring guest speakers, including Jake Bailey, who spoke powerfully on the importance of building resilience, and Cam Kalkoen, who shared insights on facing challenges and developing leadership.
Entrepreneurial Spirit: Financial Literacy and Trading Day
The final term saw our students become entrepreneurs! The Financial Literacy unit focused on practical money-management skills, culminating in the eagerly anticipated Tahuna Trading Day on December 10th. This challenge tasked teams with developing a product or service, calculating start-up costs, marketing their business, and selling to peers and teachers—a true test of their budgeting and strategic thinking.
Sportsmanship and School Pride
Sports were a major feature across all four terms. The year began with fantastic participation in Tahuna summer sports, including touch, volleyball, and futsal. As the year progressed, students enthusiastically represented Tahuna in winter codes such as basketball, netball, hockey, and football. Physical Education later focused on athletics, refining skills in sprints, field events, and relays in preparation for the Term 4 Athletics Day. Year 8 also proudly competed in the annual exchange against Oamaru Intermediate.
Looking to the Future
The Year 8 cohort has already begun preparing for their exciting next chapter, participating in high school orientation visits to local schools.
As the intermediate journey concludes, students can look forward to a fantastic series of celebrations, including the end-of-year Fun Day at Moana Pool and Bowl Line, and the memorable Year 8 Leavers' Disco to celebrate their achievements and the memories they have created at Tahuna.
We wish our students all the best as they transition to high school in 2026. It has been a pleasure to witness their growth and dedication this year.
Ngā mihi
