Road Safety and Active Travel - Working Together with the Dunedin City Council

Over the past couple of months, a group of Tahuna school councillors have been working closely with a team from the D.C.C. on road safety and active travel.

Starting with a couple of workshops at Tahuna, around 18 of our school councillors worked with staff from the D.C.C. to learn about road safety and about the importance of active travel. They learnt how the two are linked together as, while we'd all like to promote active travel, students first need to have a good grasp of road safety.

The councillors were guided through some activities about road safety. This prepared them for going out to some local schools to run the activities with younger children. So far, groups of councillors have visited St. Clair School and Bathgate Park School. We've also got a trip to St. Brigid's School next week.

These councillors have been wonderful ambassadors for our school while also doing a great job supporting the younger children in learning about road safety.

We've got a couple more things planned in the coming weeks. We're going to collect a full week of data to find out how Tahuna students travel to school - we're hoping to combine this with a campaign to promote active travel and maybe even some spot prizes. More info on this will follow in the school notices.

Many thanks to Bonny and her team at the D.C.C. for giving us the opportunity to support this programme. Many thanks also to our councillors for their fantastic mahi.
