Halberg Junior Disability Games
Connor Fa'Asega participated in the Halberg Junior Disability Games during the holidays. Room 1 interviewed him about his experience.
Last term, the school supported Connor Fa’Asega in his fundraising to travel to Cambridge to represent Otago in the Halberg Junior Disability Games. We managed to raise a lot of money for Connor to participate in the games and it was great to see the students and staff at Tahuna supporting him. The Halberg Junior Disability games are a three day sporting competition, which were held during the school holidays on Friday 22 April to Sunday 24 April. Those who participated were between the age of eight and 21 and contestants competed in regional teams in 19 sports.
We talked to Connor earlier this week to find out more about his exciting adventure and success throughout the games.
1. What did you participate in at the Halberg Junior Disability Games?
I participated at Boccia and the running events.
2. What is Boccia
It’s like lawn bowls.
Boccia is a game that is similar to lawn bowls and petanque. It is a non-contact target sport that is played indoors from a seated position using soft leather balls. It can be played as individuals, in pairs or teams of three.
3. Did you get a place?
Yes I did. I got third in B class for boccia.
4. What was your favourite part of the Games and why?
I enjoyed everything but if I had to pick one, it would be the running of the 50m. I was never allowed to run at school or home but I was allowed to at the games. Being able to run makes me feel good.
5. What was the biggest challenge for you?
My biggest challenge was getting up at 6:00 am on a couple of mornings.
6. What are your goals for the future games?
My goal for the future is to beat everyone at the running events.
