Mandarin Elective at Tahuna

Language, cultural understandings, games and activities.

In our Chinese Elective Class, we begin by playing some games such as ‘Treasure Box’ and ‘Drumming and Passing’ to help reinforce the vocab that students have learned.

Next we head to our path of “Cultural Discovery” – staring with ‘interesting facts’. We explore exciting things like the Harbin Ice Festival, the Chinese abacus, Chinese cuisine, the four great inventions of ancient China, Lanzhou handmade noodles and so on, through selected images, quality videos and researched materials.

It is then followed by ‘activity time’. Often we experience or make things that are from the ‘interesting facts’. So far we have had fun with a compass, a windmill and practising using chopsticks. We will carry on exploring by looking at Chinese knotting, tea tasting, tug-of-war and more.

There is always some lighthearted music or classical tunes from mysterious old China or sometimes kids pop songs in the background of our class, as we step into this interesting learning world of Chinese Culture.
