Let's get READING!!!!
Reading is a vital component of students development. It improves literacy, social skills, health and learning outcomes. So let's get READING!!!
Reading for pleasure is an important skill and one that has many benefits. Research suggests that if we are reading for personal enjoyment it reduces our stress levels, tensions are eased and our heart rate lowers. Even reading for a short period of time each evening (10 minutes) will have benefits beyond the classroom.
For some students reading can be challenging, but just like anything to improve your skill set you need to work on it. To become a better swimmer we swim, to be a better sportsperson we practice, so we need to place more emphasise on reading. To be a better reader - we need to read. Reading at home in a safe environment eases tension and allows students to read at their level or pace and not feel intimidated by outside factors.
As parents you have an important part to play in your children's development. Reading is no exception. Please encourage your child to read each night, you could read to them, share a page each, role model turning off the technology and reading for 20 minutes after dinner each night.
Reading doesn't need to be a big chapter book, it could be a magazine, a newspaper article, a sports report, poetry, fiction or non-fiction. Reading is reading and all reading has benefits.
If you would like a supply of school journals at home for your child to work through then please either make contact with your classroom teacher, or with Deb Tasi-Cordtz our Learning Support Coordinator and we will sort out a supply of books for you at home.
Our library has recently relocated to a much better space and classes are having regular visits to the library where students are taught essential library skills and encouraged to select books to take home. The library is also open at interval and lunchtimes to issue and return books and just enjoy the space.
