Maths At Tahuna!

Our vision is that at Tahuna all students will be given every opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to use mathematics effectively in everyday life. 

Within our teams at Tahuna students are assessed and then grouped into streamed maths classes based on ability so that we can meet their needs as effectively as possible.  During these classes we cover everything from number and statistics, through to measurement, geometry, financial literacy and problem solving.

The streaming of students enables us to provide extension and support as appropriate.  The programmes we have in place include; O'Mathalon, ICAS exams, Problem Challenge and Maths Badges.  More details on these will follow through the year in the school newsletter.

In our supported maths classes we aim for smaller class sizes with teacher aide support.  In these classes the aim is to engage students in practical, hands - on activities to help them develop self belief and a positive attitude towards maths, while also building their core skills and knowledge.

We are continuing to build up our physical resources, aiming for a wide variety of practical activities to cater to all needs. These are supplemented by the use of Mathletics and a range of different apps using class devices to build confidence and reinforce learning.  All Tahuna students have a Mathletics password and this is great for reinforcing learning from home.

Since mid - 2015 Kristy McBride (yr 7) and David Owen (yr 8) have been in charge of running maths at Tahuna. This includes ongoing reviews of all our programmes and professional development provided by the University of Otago Maths Department.  All teaching staff at Tahuna also attend professional development to help us further improve our programmes and classroom teaching.
