R18 & 13's Reusable lunchbox solutions

By Genevieve Henderson and Sienna McAra

Currently in Room 18 we are doing PBL (project based learning). For our PBL unit we are trying to reduce waste at school because we found out that there was 184 kgs worth of plastic throughout one day. We are trying to reduce that number to only 90 kgs (which is more than 50% gone).

In our class we are trying to reduce plastic in lunchboxes. We are doing our unit with Room 13. For this unit we have been split into 3 groups: beeswax wraps, beeswax snack bags and sandwich wraps. These are the products we are making to reduce our waste at Tāhuna. We are planning prototypes and researching the steps to making our final product.

We also looked into already made products and how we can recreate them. So far we have created annotated drawings for our prototypes, they include the rough size, steps and the most important parts to create the final product. Next we will create the prototypes.

We are using fabric scraps from the textiles room so we don’t create any more rubbish or buy new things. Some groups are looking into ways to create stronger seals, like snap buttons. We are still in the early stages of this project but so far the results are looking very good!
