Camp Berwick’s GIANT Flying Fox

By Ella Edwards                                                                 My favourite part of Camp Berwick was the giant flying fox.

When my activity group arrived at the flying fox I was really excited. As everyone waited for their turn, we all talked about how scary it looked. Once it was finally my go, I couldn’t wait, even though I was really nervous. I had to put a special harness on that went around your waist, but if you wanted to you could put it up higher. The two adults bunched up the rope and I had to put it over my arm so that it wouldn’t get caught on the ground below. I also had to hold onto a metal pole, which was connected to another one that you sat on. It kind of looked like an upside - down T. The air whooshed past me as I lifted my feet off the ground. I looked down below me and saw a little river. After a few seconds I was flying over a long strip of bright green grass. At the end of the rope that was attached to the flying fox were some tyres that stopped people from flying off. After that I jumped down, grabbed onto the rope and started to pull it up the hill to the wooden platform where everyone else was. On our second turn we were challenged to lean back in the harness and let go of the pole with both hands. It was scary but I loved every bit of it. After all the kids had a few turns we told the adults to go down. It was really funny waiting at the bottom and running away from the flying fox so that it wouldn’t crash into us.
