Glow Worms
Written by Riley McCracken
On the evening of the first day of camp, on the 20th February we went for a walk to find glow worms. We found them illuminating areas on the underside of bridges and along the ground and walls. Glow worms lights are bioluminescent, which is the natural phenomenon of light created by a chemical reaction. In glow-worms, a molecule called luciferin is combined with oxygen to create oxyluciferin which causes it to glow in the dark.Glow-worms use their mucous glands to create small, flexible tubes similar to hammocks. The glow-worm larva is suspended in its hammock-like mucous tube. We had plenty of fun finding such beautiful, fascinating, invertebrates.
