A Huge Shout-Out to Our Amazing Students!

Our recent Open Night was a resounding success, and that's largely thanks to the incredible contributions of our students. The school truly shone, and if your child was one of our ambassadors, you have every reason to be incredibly proud! They all did a fantastic job representing Tahuna Normal Intermediate. A special mention goes to Ben and Sadie, who spoke brilliantly to a crowd of over 600 people – a task that would daunt most adults! Their confidence was truly impressive.

Your Voice Matters: Spreading the Word About Tahuna

We believe in investing our resources directly into your children's learning, rather than extensive marketing campaigns. In Dunedin, we know the power of word-of-mouth is invaluable. If you have friends or family considering Tahuna Normal Intermediate for 2025, please encourage them to submit their enrollments by September 5th. As an added incentive, any family who enrols by September 1st will go into a draw to win a $200 uniform shop voucher!

Make a difference in the community.

Here in New Zealand, every state and state-integrated school, including Tahuna Normal Intermediate, is governed by a School Board (formerly known as a Board of Trustees). This system is quite unique globally, and it places significant power and responsibility directly within our school community.

What is a School Board?

Think of our School Board as the strategic leadership team for the school. Their primary objective is to ensure that every student at Tahuna attains their highest possible standard in educational achievement.

The Board's responsibilities are broad and include:

  • Setting the strategic direction and long-term plans for our school, in consultation with our community.

  • Ensuring the school complies with all legal and policy requirements.

  • Monitoring and evaluating student progress and achievement.

  • Overseeing the management of staff, property, finances, and curriculum.

  • Appointing and supporting our Principal, who is the Board's chief executive and responsible for the day-to-day running of the school.

How is this Different from International Models?

The New Zealand Board of Trustees system stands out in several ways:

  1. High Degree of Decentralisation: Compared to many countries, New Zealand has a highly devolved education system. Much of the power and decision-making for a school rests with the individual school Board, rather than a central government department or district authority. This means our community has a direct say in how Tahuna is run and what its priorities are.

  2. Parent-Led Governance: The strong emphasis on elected parent representatives is a defining feature. In many international systems, school governance might be more heavily controlled by government-appointed officials, local councils, or a distinct professional governing body. Here, parents are fundamental to the governance structure.

  3. "Self-Managing" Schools: The "Tomorrow's Schools" reforms in 1989 significantly shifted responsibility for school management to individual Boards. While there's a national curriculum and Ministry of Education oversight, schools largely manage their own operations, budgets, and staffing under the guidance of the Board. This is a greater degree of autonomy than you might find in many centralised education systems.

We believe this unique system fosters a strong sense of ownership and partnership between the school and its community, ultimately benefiting the student's learning journey.

Nominations for the Tahuna School Board nominations close tomorrow at 12 noon and voting opens on the 13 August.
