Space Camp Day 4

It’s the last official day of space camp and it’s been a rush!

Today started with us learning about humans living on the Moon and Mars and the challenges we face there. We discovered that we would need to establish ourselves on the Moon first before heading to Mars. This because the Moon has no atmosphere to hinder space missions.

We talked about how we need to protect ourselves from radiation and extreme temperatures. Then we discussed useful shapes to use in our design before moving on to build our own lunar bases.

Then it was time for our graduation lunch! We had some yummy food and our keynote speaker Karina, who is a mission director on many Sophia missions. Sophia is a giant plant with a telescope in it that goes very high into the stratosphere to explore the universe.

Then it was our final mission, what we had been waiting for the whole week. Zipllining! It was on to the buses then away to the port hills to Christchurch Adventure Park. We put on our gear and then took a chairlift to the top of the mountain. There are four zip lines to get back down to the base. The longest is 1.1km long and you can reach speeds of 60-80 km/h! Mr Lousley and Mr CB both got to over 100 km/h!

Wow! Space Camp 2021! We are the first school in the South Island to undergo this week of Space training.

The students have been fantastic, the facilitation brilliant and the calibre of people we have met is world class.

Well done to all students for being successful in being selected. You have modelled the Tahuna Values and have paved the way and set the standard for this that will follow.
