Establishing a safe mathematical learning environment

This week we have been discussing and co-constructing how we learn best in maths.

As a class we discussed how some students can have strong opinions and feelings towards maths and what we need to do to help ensure we're all doing our best.

We set up a continuum to see how people feel about maths and this generated a rich conversation so the students can better understand how everybody approaches the subject in a different way. This understanding will lead to a safer mathematical environment.

This is what we came up with:

+ Everyone can learn math to the highest level

+ Mistakes are valuable - it's how we learn

+ Questions are really important

+ Maths is about creativity

+ Maths is about connections and communicating

+ Our class is about learning not performing

+ Depth of thinking is more important than speed.
