Fish Survey Gathers Worthwhile Data

The Tahuna Monitoring team spent the day gathering information on freshwater fish species at Tomahawk Lagoon.

Mr Daniel Jack from the Department of Conservation led a team of Tahuna Scientists on a mission to discover what freshwater fish species are present at Tomahawk Lagoon. We were incredibly lucky to acquire the services of Daniel for the day. He has a wealth of knowledge on New Zealand Freshwater Fish and is passionate about protecting our native freshwater fish.

This is the second time we have carried out this survey and all data gathered will be entered onto the NZ Freshwater Fish Database. We counted and measured hundreds of Common Bullies (Gobiomorhus cotidianus), a handful of Adult Inanga (Galaxias maculatus) and three huge Longfin Eels (Anguilla dieffenbachii). We also countered and measured a number of introduced Perch.

The Tahuna Scientists also carried out routine water testing with the help of Andrew Innes from Healthy Harbour Watchers. It was great to see our scientists experiencing 'Real-Life' science in the field. There were plenty of smiles and some intelligent questions being posed and answered.
