Year 7 & 8 news

We welcome back our Year 8s and a brilliant start at Tahuna to our new Year 7s.

Year 8

The Year 8 students have made a great start back to Tahuna looking forward to a new year with new challenges. Already some have joined sports teams and groups they were not involved in last year hoping to make the most of the opportunities on offer at Tahuna before high school.

Camp preparation is happening already in classes as they prepare for their week out at Camp Waiora with the first classes heading out in week 4. Parent help is required at all camps and is greatly appreciated. Please find out from your classroom teachers when your child is scheduled to go out and see if you are available to assist. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend time in the outdoors and is a great experience for our students.

We hope we have good weather for all our camps.

Our first major topic is Identity where we look closely at our heritage, our learning styles, and ourselves as citizens. This is an excellent unit of work where we find out about and appreciate how everyone is so unique.

Year 7

The Year 7 students have all made a brilliant start to their time at Tahuna and are eager to sample everything that is on offer. Many have already joined sports teams and trialled for the Lit Quiz and are coping well with the fast pace of their new school.

This week has been their first taste of working with the Specialist teachers and all seem to be really enjoying the six different teaching and learning areas they have been working on. It has been great to have so many parents coming to meetings and contacting us via email as this ensures a settled start for your children at Intermediate.

Our main focus for the first few weeks is getting to know each other and develop our classroom environment and feeling, this is important as we have students coming to Tahuna from all areas of Dunedin. Our Inquiry focus for the term is Mapping New Zealand and The World, looking at the geography of our country and the world and we will be linking our maths programme to this topic.

Year 7 camps will be happening in the first 4 weeks of Term 2 and you will be receiving more information about this as dates are confirmed. Remember that you are able to set up an account and begin paying for camp rather than have to pay in a lump sum.
