Fish Ecologist - Matt Dale Talks to Room 15 .
Matt Dale - Fish ecologist, spent a Monday afternoon with Room 15 sharing his knowledge about local fish such as Blue cod, Barracouta, flounder and kōura.
Matt brought in a variety of lures and hooks related to catching Blue Cod, Barracouta, and other species of fish in the Dunedin harbour and surrounding areas. It was amazing to see how traditional hook styles were still being modelled in modern hooks.
Fun fact - Blue Cod all start as females, then the biggest fish in a group will adapt and become the only male in the group. The next biggest fish (female), will replace this male if he is caught.
The Kōura were a big hit. Matt brought in some for the class to look at and handle (with care). He had sort permission to collect the Kōura and returned them after visiting with us. His daughter Gabby Dale, helped to catch them.
Thanks to the exciting presentation, our students are ready to start designing a lure or hook to be made in E-Tech next week.
