2021 Academic Extension Opportunities at Tahuna
Tahuna provides a range of academic extension opportunities to extend students.
For many years Tahuna has proudly sent teams to regional and also national quiz events which are designed to extend intermediate and secondary students.
We are currently underway preparing for the National Lit Quiz which is on the 26th of June in Wellington, after winning the Otago heat.
Next term we have the Extra Spelling Quiz - held at Tahuna - where students compete against (often 40+ other) teams from around Otago on Spelling, word puzzles and dictionary skills.
In term two this year we will be relaunching our Tahuna Maths badge program, where students looking for a little extra challenge in Mathematics can complete a research project on a topic of their choice. Once they have completed the project to a high standard they receive a certificate and a badge to proudly display on their Tahuna uniform. Students are able to seek assistance from me at any time.
In term three we have the Otago Classics competition at the University - where teams compete to answer questions on Roman and Greek Mythology and ancient life. Later in the term we have the Extra Current Events quiz at Bathgate - where students answer questions based on big events throughout the year and material published in the Otago Daily Times Extra! Magazines.
We also participate in the ICAS exams in term three. Exams are offered in Maths, English, Spelling, Writing, Digital Technologies and Science. Students are provided with practise exams and then these are run in the Tahuna hall. This is a great way for students to see where they stack up against other children from over 30 contributing countries.
It is not all about hard work though! These quizzes are designed to be fun to participate in as well as challenging and there are always spot prizes up for grabs.
If this sounds like something your child would be interested in, they can come and see me (Miss Brawley) in Room 8 to register their interest. Quizzes are also mentioned at assembly and in the daily notices.
I'm looking forward to our next challenge!
