2023 School Council Annual Report

We have written this report to provide the Tahuna school community with an insight into some of the work which has been done by the Tahuna School Council during 2023.

In 2023 we have supported many different causes both within the school and in the wider community. Whilst we cannot of course meet every request, our mahi has included the following:

  • we raised $1028 from a Mufti Day held to support the recovery in the Hawkes Bay region following Cyclone Gabrielle - these funds went to a fund helping some of the hardest hit schools in the region

  • we raised close to $250 for the R.S.A. Poppy Appeal

  • we made a donation of $300 to help send a Tahuna team to the Lit Quiz Nationals in Wellington

  • we made a koha of $250 to purchase two wreaths which were laid on Anzac Day at the Dawn Parade and at the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery by a group of School Councillors and other Tahuna students

  • we raised $725 on Pink Shirt Day for the Mental Health foundation and $230 on Daffodil Day for the Cancer Society

  • our biggest fundraiser of the year was when we raised close to $5000 through the 40 Hour Challenge for the work of World Vision

  • we purchased farewell gifts for several departing teachers to show students’ appreciation for their contributions to the kura over many years

  • These koha were all made possible by student-led Mufti Days throughout the year

  • we also organised four successful discos during the year which raised additional funds for the School Council’s work

  • our major purchase has been a set of high quality football goals which will be in place early next year - a great example of how our School Council looks to make improvements not just for current but also for future Tahuna students

  • several Councillors attended a World Vision Leadership Day, and a large number of Councillors attended a workshop run at Tahuna by World Vision

  • Councillors also worked as guides at Open Night

  • a group of Councillors recently worked with the D.C.C. to provide feedback about future plans for playgrounds in the local area

  • Councillors have also been involved in putting forward ideas for the Tahuna Canteen for 2024

  • members of the Council hosted Q & A sessions in school assemblies where they put some great pātai to visiting Olympic swimmer, Zac Reid, and to the visiting project manager for the FIFA Womens’ World Cup

  • Councillors also played a big part in making an entertaining and informative video with the help of Mr. Clarke with the aim of explaining how to wear the Tahuna uniform correctly

Looking forward to next year we’d like to continue with our plans to get a new and improved bin system for Tahuna which would enable us to recycle a large proportion of our waste.

We’d like to thank School Councillors for their commitment to attending meetings throughout the year.

As always, we’ve continued to give a voice to students’ ideas and concerns through the year. This has ranged from suggestions for new projects to ways to look after our school through to improving facilities for our students and much, much more.

We’d like to thank Mr. Clarke for his support of the School Council’s mahi. We’d also like to thank Pete, our caretaker, for all his work following up on our requests. His efforts are very much appreciated.

So we end another successful year, where Councillors have represented their classes well and have been a productive voice in the life of Tahuna.

We appreciate you taking the time to read our 2023 Tahuna School Council report.
