Digital Technology Term 2
Digital technology has been ramped up term 2 with the introduction of 3D modelling and Photoshop added to the CoSpaces programme for designing and developing digital outcomes (3DO).
Students have taken on a learning journey, where they are Captain of their own learning ship, and have to navigate the sea of problems and possibilities in order to create a solution to an opportunity that they have identified. The theme that will drive their learning journey for term 3 has been introduced. As part of the STEAM programme running across the whole school, the focus is Mission to Mars. Students are required to explore possible solutions to the requirements of travelling to Mars and setting up a habitat or research base on the red planet. By using their digital toolbox, they work towards creating virtual environments that showcase the solutions which may include food production and processing, space travel to Mars, communication technology, resource conversion technology (ie. CO2 into O2 and hydrogen, dirt into adobe housing). Using tools like Tinkercad students can design and prototype dwellings, vehicles and other infrastructure that would be required for a Mars base. In the spirit of past travellers and explorers of the 18th and 19th century, students are guided in their learning journey to be in control of their decision making, using tools such as a map, so that they can plot their course and set goals, a compass to align their motivations and purpose, and an anchor that they will need to weigh. They are given a journal where they record the evidence of their decision making, and this is presented back on its completion. Students have been totally engaged in the programme, thoroughly enjoying the choice of project work on offer, displaying resourceful and inventive ideas, and responding positively to the narrative created by the learning journey concepts and the themes that are presented in Digital Technology.
